101 - ALLEN SIMON OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING BRONX ZOO

Allen Simon (1907-2007). Aviary, Bronx Zoo, created about 50 or sixty years ago and submitted to New Yorker Magazine, for use as a cover. This painting, in oil, shows a family out for a pleasant weekend visit to the Bronx Zoo. Depicting three generations participating in the joys of the visit, greeting each other, while each child is portrayed in a different state of activity. While grandma buys one of the children an ice cream bar, another child sharing his. The older child is looking on pensively, because he hasn’t gotten his ice cream yet, and the teenager remains slightly aloof, staring off, in his own world. The atmosphere is airy, bright and fresh. The colors harmonious. Framing the family is a wall with balustrade on top. If one looks carefully one can appreciate the the light and shade falling on the bricks and note the play of color from brick to brick. Perspective accurately comes into play with the rendering of the aviary and the back ground is carefully and subtly abstracted to surround, without diminishing, the main subject, which is an extended family outing at the Bronx Zoo. Allen Simon was born in Sheffield England in 1907. His professional studies included Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design, and the Art Student's League. After struggling economically through The Great Depression, Mr. Simon was offered the position as Art Director of the United Jewish Appeal, a fund raising organization.
