Necklace weighs 75g, bracelet 50g. This lovely set was originally a rope-length single strand of Mikimoto pearls, a gift from Dr. Ladislav Alexander to his wife Edith. Purchased in 1965, Dr. Alexander (an exporter with Alexander Trading Company) purchased strands of Mikimoto pearls from a Japanese wholesaler, who told Dr. Alexander to keep the best one for his wife- as he separated it and handed it to him. Edith, not a huge fan of plain pearls (nor one for designer names), brought the strand of pearls to a jeweler in Rome in 1968 where she handpicked 18K gold hardware adorned with emeralds and had the set re-strung as the beautiful single strand necklace and triple strand bracelet it is today. Dr. Alexander was legendary hero in pre-World War II Hungary (today Czechoslovakia). In the aftermath of World War II, Dr. Alexander took great personal risk when he made available a building on his property, 22 apartments and seven stores, as a refuge for displaced Jews. When the town (Kosice, Czechoslovakia) was invaded by Communists, Dr. Alexander was arrested and put into prison for his great public service. Edith Alexander was his loving wife who shared his visions and efforts. This set was intended to be in Edith Alexander Estate Auction but one of the bracelet's strands was separated and we were having the piece professionally re-strung. Neat hinged lid, footed jewelry or trinket box made of the uncommon mineral Rhodonite having brass frame and hardware. This box has 4 square column corners of fine deep red stone specimens. Rhodonite was first discovered in the 1790’s in the Ural Mountains of Russia near Maloe Sidelnikovo, and was called "orletz" by the locals, Russian for “the Eagle Stone” because people began to notice eagles in the region often carried small pieces of the stone to their nests. It soon became tradition to place small Rhodonite stones in their babies’ cradles as well. The custom was later extended to giving Rhodonite to travelers as a protective stone. It was later found in a few small deposits across the world, including Canada, Australia, Brazil, Sweden, Peru, and England. In the United States it has been found in North Carolina, Colorado, New Jersey, and has been named as the state gem of Massachusetts. Measures 4 3/4" L x 3 1/4" W x 2 1/8" H. Weighs 19g.
